Special Deliveries Kick Off 50th Anniversary for Harris Health

Two special deliveries on Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day) at LBJ and Ben Taub hospitals commemorated the 50th anniversary celebration of Harris Health System’s first day of operations on Jan. 1, 1966.

Baby Michael Dorsey was born at 12:33 a.m. at LBJ Hospital, while baby Nakaylah Thompson was born at 3:29 a.m. at Ben Taub Hospital. For being the first babies born at Harris Health, the newborns and their family were honored with glass engraved plaques, gift baskets, car seats and other gifts.

“I’m honored and overwhelmed by all the attention,” said Marilyn Vasquez Dorsey. “It’s a great honor to have my son born on New Year’s Day and to be part of the 50th anniversary.”

Husband Michael Dorsey and their blended family of five children were at the hospital to celebrate their newest addition.

To commemorate the occasion, four Harris Health employees born in 1966 at Jefferson Davis Hospital, the labor and delivery facility of Harris Health at the time, participated in the celebration. Harris Health (formerly Harris County Hospital District) began operations with only two facilities, Jeff Davis and Ben Taub hospitals.

Jessie Tucker, administrator, LBJ Hospital, and Jeff Davis-born employees Theresa Collins Batiste, Agatha Christi Prothro, Marie Alozie and Robert Beal hand delivered the various gifts to the family. Each employee also received a plaque.

“To know that I share a historic date with Harris Health is a blessing,” Prothro said.

At Ben Taub Hospital, employee Elizabeth Trayham was visibly moved when presented a plaque commemorating her birth 50 years ago. The glass engraved plaque features a stenciled image of the hospital that stood on Allen Parkway until it was demolished in 1999.

Harris Health celebrates a year-long observance of its anniversary though 2016.
