A Tribute to Marcy Taub Wessel, Vice-Chair Harris County Hospital District Foundation
It is an honor to salute Mrs. Marcy Taub Wessel, a businessperson and philanthropist. She is wife of Thomas Freimuth Wessel and proud mother of Henry. Marcy was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and graduated magna cum laude from St. John’s School and Southern Methodist University with a BA, an MBA, and Master’s in Real Estate.
Marcy and her brother Henry J.N. Taub II proudly continued the family tradition of giving back to the community by personally getting involved with and supporting numerous deserving causes. The primary focus of their philanthropy is medical research, providing quality healthcare for all, education, law enforcement, and the visual and performing arts. In particular, they have always had a passion to support children and the underserved.
Marcy joined the Harris County Hospital District Foundation Board (“the Foundation) as a trustee in 2017. During her tenure, she hosted several events, such as, the Silver Tea in 2012. The Silver Tea raises funds for the Nursing Leadership Fund – providing stipends for books, fees, and time off pay to full time nursing service employees who are in the process of pursuing advance nursing. In 2015, Marcy, chaired the Jubilee of Caring, along with Harry & Rose Cullen, Sidney & Don Faust, Cora Sue & Harry Mach, Regina Rogers, and Tom Wessel in support of Harris Health System, Smith Clinic. The Smith Clinic, named in honor of Lester and Sue Smith, designed exclusively for outpatients requiring specialty care. The five-story facility has more than 100 exam rooms, and houses diagnostic and specialty clinics, as well as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasound diagnostics. In 2020, Marcy and Tom Wessel, Henry J.N. Taub II, and Steph an Al Walker, chaired the Jubilee of Caring – honoring Whitney and Jim Crane with Ben Taub Humanitarian Award. The Ben Taub Humanitarian Award honors those philanthropic individuals who have also made significant contributions to Houston. The proceeds from the event benefitted the Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital Level I Trauma Center (Ginni and Richard Mithoff Trauma Center) first floor renovation, construction cost only.
Driven to make a difference in her community, Marcy not only served as a Trustee of the Harris County Hospital District Foundation, later the full board voted and elected her to serve as Vice Chair from 2018* to 2021. Other boards included Baylor Medical Foundation, The Pauline Sterne Wolff Memorial Foundation, The Menil Collection, Taub Foundation, as well as an Advisory Director of the Alley Theatre.
The Taubs have given major gifts, monetary as well as valuable time to Ben Taub Hospital, the Carol and Henry J.N. Taub Campus and Library at St. John’s School, The Menil Collection, DePelchin Children’s Center, and the Carol and Henry J.N. Taub Gymnasium and Theater at San Jacinto Elementary School.
We will always be grateful for Mrs. Marcy Taub Wessel vision and support of the HCHD Foundation mission to enhance the broad healthcare mission of Harris Health System. Marcy irreplaceable civic and charitable contributions to the Harris County community will live forever.
On behalf of the Harris County Hospital District Foundation Board of Trustees, thank you for being you. We salute you.
In Honor of Marcy Taub Wessel
